Kalushi Recordings, the Cape Town based label headed by Rob Toca and D’Ritmo, first premiered their annual VA series last year with an 8 track compilation featuring some of the finest in local electronic talent. They followed it up with several other notable releases including Pierre Johnson & Avi Subban’s massive Rejects EP. This left them ready and poised to take on 2019 with another VA Sampler, that has now dropped on all digital platforms.
Once again comprising 8 original tunes the release in general has an overarching moody and melodic feel to it, with various shades of emotion. Cabanni Dosche’s opening Laundry Day is one of the slower grooves on the release alongside Random Fact’s Tunnel Vision. This is actually the first release from Random Fact, the new alias from Ofentse of Deep Souls. Fellow Jozi member Keegs Bantom keeps up his hot streak of releases with the silky The Initiation and Laminin Music returns from the previous year’s edition to drop off a lighter, more upbeat number in Wishful Thinking.
Dark and driving flavors can be found in the hauntingly slamming Deep Six from Gumz and the creeping vocal energy of OU’s Galaxy which features local wordsmith Lazarusman. Label head Rob Toca teamed up with Avi Subban to deliver the absolute showstopper of the compilation in Illusions. Eerie keys & sonics, head nodding baselines and fire drops combine in what is surely going to be a mainstay on dance floors for the rest of the year. RadioLab rounds it all out with an almost downtempo-inspired number on the closer.
Overall the compilation manages to keep a consistent mood while varying its energies enough to remain interesting, it’s a great release for a label which is celebrating it’s 3rd birthday at the end of March. If you’re around Cape Town or Jozi both legs will be must attends, links above the stream embed.
